I choose this book on Netgalley with the intention of wanting to read something different than the books I was engrossed in at the time. There are moments in a reader's journey when one can easily find themselves stuck in what I often refer to as a genre rut. This rut is characterized by the tendency to gravitate towards the same genre repeatedly, which can lead to a feeling of monotony and a lack of excitement in discovering new narratives. It becomes a cycle where the familiar themes, tropes, and styles begin to blend together, making it challenging to find that spark of inspiration that comes from exploring diverse storytelling. In my quest to break free from this repetitive cycle, I sought out a book that would not only provide an engaging story but also transport me to a different world, one filled with intrigue and adventure.

The author, Thomas Lockley, has evidently poured a significant amount of effort and meticulous research into the life of privateers, which adds a rich layer of authenticity to the narrative. His dedication to capturing the essence of their lives—how they operated, the risks they took, and the moral complexities they navigated—speaks volumes about his commitment to storytelling. Lockley’s work invites readers to delve into the historical context surrounding privateering, shedding light on the socio-political dynamics of the era. It's clear that he has examined various sources, perhaps including historical accounts, maritime records, and personal diaries, to weave a narrative that is not only entertaining but also educational. This depth of research enriches the text, allowing readers to gain insight into a world that is often overlooked in mainstream literature. In exploring this book, I found myself not just entertained, but also enlightened about a fascinating aspect of history that I had previously known little about.

The Review

Thomas Lockley’s, “A Gentleman from Japan” was a well researched historical non-fiction read. This book descriptively narrates life as a privateering pirate in the Age of Exploration. The book also follows the plundering adventures of Englishman, Thomas Cavendish and the long-forgotten Japanese gentleman Christopher. This story shares a vast plethora of historical facts and details that will definitely satisfy anyone looking for a fantastic historical read or a realistic perspective of a privateer during this era.
