At the start of my renewed interest in reading, NetGalley emerged as my primary source for discovering and reading free eARCs (electronic advanced reader copies). This platform has proven to be an invaluable resource for avid readers like myself, providing access to a plethora of upcoming titles across various genres. The opportunity to immerse myself in a book before its official release is incredibly thrilling; it not only allows me to engage with the narrative ahead of the general public but also imparts a delightful sense of importance and exclusivity. There’s something uniquely exhilarating about being among the first to explore a story, to dive into the world crafted by the author, and to share my thoughts and feedback before the book hits the shelves. For my latest selection from NetGalley, I decided to continue my exploration within my current favorite genre, historical fiction. This genre has a special allure for me, as it intricately weaves the threads of the past with compelling narratives that often reflect contemporary issues and emotions. Historical fiction allows me to travel back in time, experiencing different eras, cultures, and events through the lens of richly developed characters and meticulously researched settings.

As I flipped through the options available on NetGalley, I was drawn to this particular title that promised a captivating journey through a significant historical period. I must admit, I also have a profound appreciation for books featuring a strong female protagonist. Stories that center around resilient women who navigate the complexities of their societies, challenge norms, and forge their own paths resonate deeply with me. These characters often embody strength, intelligence, and determination, making their journeys all the more inspiring and relatable. Given my affinity for narratives that celebrate women’s experiences, this choice felt not only obvious but also deeply fulfilling. I eagerly anticipated delving into the pages of this book, excited to witness the protagonist's evolution and the challenges she would face within the historical context. Each turn of the page promised to be an adventure, filled with emotional depth and rich storytelling that I could not wait to experience.

The Review

"A Season at the Cliff House" by author Brooke L. Davis wove a story of intrigue, drama, and determination. Set in 1907 San Francisco, the story follows the Hamilton family through a horrific natural disaster and how their family rebuilds and continues to move forward following the disaster. With main character Isa leading the charge, we are allowed a peek into what life was really like for a young woman during this time period. We gain an understanding that it was difficult for woman to truly be in charge of their life’s path, however, with a bit of determination and grit, one could forge her own way and live the life she has always desired. My favorite part of the book was when the author allowed the reader into the inner most thoughts of the characters as they experienced day to day life. This was a wonderful and charming read for any fan of historical fiction. I received this book as an eARC and this review is entirely of my own opinion.
