I found A Thousand Gates of Prayer while scrolling the internet as I usually do. I was initially drawn to the vivid imagery presented on the cover. I then read through the post and the synopsis of the book. Afterwards, I reached out to the author to read and review his book which was responded to swiftly with a kind reply and a download link. Along with the cover art and synopsis to grab my attention, I also have an affinity and appreciation for culture throughout the region of Asia. Asia is full of diverse traditions, philosophies, and cultures that stem from a rich tapestry of history that I have often found myself drawn to.
Once I finally started exploring all that the story had to offer I was instantly drawn into the narrative, the characters, and the culture. This was such a well rounded book that really captivated me and my heart. Continue reading to understand the full scope of why I enjoyed this title so much.
The Review
“A Thousand Gates of Prayer” is set in the small rural Japanese town of Hakone, near the slopes of Mount Hakone where tradition and heritage reign supreme. One of its residents includes Miyuki Miyamoto, a modest, humble, dedicated, and obedient daughter who works at the local market day in and day out selling “lucky black eggs of Hakone” which her family has sold for generations. One day as fate would have it, she crosses paths with Masahiro Yoshida, son of a well-known lawyer and business man from the big city of Kyoto. This chance meeting will forever change not only Miyuki but the town of Hakone as well. This story is rich with the power of familial ties, tradition, and even love. It showcases the challenges that society can face when heritage is up against modernity. And it begs readers to understand the value of looking fear in the eye and rising to face it. I appreciate the effort that went into ingraining the cultural essence of Japan into this tale. I immensely enjoyed not only the story, but the characters, and the value that was weaved into the curation of this narrative. “A Thousand Gates of Prayer” is a story that will stand the test of time and be readable for years to come.
