I entered the Goodreads giveaway for this book primarily due to its captivating and eerie cover art, which immediately drew my attention and piqued my curiosity. Additionally, the book's description provided a tantalizing glimpse into a world shrouded in mystery, where technology had taken a sinister turn, leading to unforeseen consequences. I had also encountered this book multiple times across various online platforms, each time noticing its rising popularity. The fact that it was penned by a New York Times bestselling author, someone whose work I had not previously explored, added an extra layer of intrigue. Given my fondness for darker thrillers, I was particularly excited about the prospect of this book delivering a gripping experience, and I hoped it would meet my expectations and perhaps even exceed them.

As I began reading, I quickly discovered that this book truly hit the nail on the head, providing me with everything I had anticipated and so much more. The plot was intricately woven, filled with unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters were well-developed, each with their own complexities and motivations that added depth to the story. The author skillfully blended elements of suspense and psychological tension, creating an atmosphere that was both chilling and thought-provoking.

I am aware that there was some controversy surrounding the release of this book, stemming from certain incidents that may or may not have occurred, which sparked a debate among readers. However, I have always maintained a personal philosophy when it comes to rating and reviewing books: I base my opinions solely on the quality of the writing and the content presented within the pages. To me, the narrative, character development, and overall execution of the story are what truly matter. While I recognize that many readers may take external factors into account when forming their opinions, I choose to focus exclusively on the literary aspects of the work. This approach allows me to appreciate the artistry of storytelling without the influence of outside controversies, ensuring that my reading experience remains authentic and untainted.

The Review

"Behind A Closed Door" by J.D. Barker is a rousing book that I can only describe as if 50 Shades of Grey, The Social Dilemma, and The Hunger Games had a baby. There was spice, suspense, and technology gone awry. I was quite intrigued to read this as I’ve seen so many people vying to win a copy of this book. I found this book to have many thrilling parts mixed with a few parts that were a tad over the top. Overall I did enjoy reading this as it kept my attention from start to finish. I also would like to note that I liked the ending, and found the message to be very eye opening to the current state of tech and the way humans are obsessed with it. This book won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I would definitely recommend reading it all the way through before passing judgement.
