The cover of this novel immediately struck me with its intriguing design, evoking a strong sense of female Sherlock Holmes vibes that I found utterly captivating. The artwork featured a clever and assertive woman, reminiscent of the iconic detective, complete with a determined expression that hinted at the mysteries waiting to be unraveled within the pages. This compelling imagery sparked my curiosity and drew me in, compelling me to enter the giveaway for this book without a moment's hesitation. Once I began reading, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the writing and the skillful way in which the author crafted the narrative. Each chapter was meticulously structured, allowing for a seamless flow of events that kept me engaged and eager to turn the page. The pacing was just right, with moments of tension interspersed with rich character development, making it easy to become emotionally invested in the story and its protagonists.
Moreover, I have a deep affinity for historical fiction, particularly those narratives set during tumultuous times of conflict such as World War I and World War II. The backdrop of these wars provides a unique lens through which to explore human resilience, moral dilemmas, and the complexities of societal change. It adds layers of depth to the characters' experiences and decisions, often highlighting the stark contrasts between personal struggles and larger historical events. This novel, with its vivid portrayal of the era and its characters' journeys, resonated with my interests and provided a fascinating exploration of life during those challenging times. The intertwining of personal stories with historical contexts enhances the reading experience, making it not just a story, but a window into a world shaped by conflict and change.
The Review
“Betrayal at Blackthorn Park” by Julia Kelly follows SIU (Special Investigations Unit) field agents Evelyne Redfern and partner David Poole in 1940’s at war Britain. Murder, sabotage, treason, and greed steal the show in this deceptive mystery sprinkled with a hint of romance. This was a fairly quick read as clues are uncovered swiftly and the main characters go over details of the case. I really enjoyed Evelyne’s character as she was in my opinion very determined and driven. I also liked how the chapters were broken up into shorter segments. I think this would be a great read for any fans of mysteries.
