Who is D.L. Hannah?
Do you ever meet someone and instantly think to yourself, "Wow, this person is just exceptionally cool"? This was my first thought upon interacting with D.L. Hannah on the social media platform Threads. Right off the bat, D.L. became a supportive and engaging mutual and as I was just starting out, I genuinely appreciated her kindness or encouragement more than I can ever express. Not only is D.L. an incredibly talented author having written and published five books but she also is an advocate for women and people with disabilities, runs a podcast, and is a Clinical Community Psychology graduate. In my mind D.L. is a powerhouse, not only in the literary world as a science fiction author but also in life.
D.L. Hannah has become a person that I not only look up to but also deeply admire. Her myriad of talents not only showcase her versatility but also her commitment to creating an impact that I find truly inspiring. I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to befriend her, as she exemplifies what it means to be both a creative force and a compassionate individual. Through her actions and words, D.L. continues to motivate those around her including myself, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Come along with me as I ask D.L. some questions, to get an inside look behind her mind and motivations as a science fiction author in the literary world.
The Interview
Chapter Chirp: Tell me a little bit about yourself and how you decided to become an author?
D.L.: I was born in Youngstown, Ohio and my favorite subject is English. Writing is
something that has always come naturally to me. I’m also an avid reader. I honestly don’t
think I “decided” to become an author. When a very vivid, supernatural dream inspired
me to put the details into writing, my Platirius and Coldarius series were born.
Chapter Chirp: How long did it take you to write your latest title and what was your inspiration for this series?
D.L.: I began writing Platirius Book I shortly after the Supreme Court dismantled Roe vs Wade. Two years ago, I began a podcast called Amerisogyny, where I advocate for women and people with disabilities. I research stories from around the world and highlight the ones I believe align with our vibe. When I saw the faces of women crumple after hearing the decision, I became angry. I had to do Something To channel my anger and grief. Therefore, I started writing a pro-women series to inspire women to hold on to their bravery and self-efficacy. Some may view Platirius as ultra-feminist—and perhaps it is. I set out to write stories about powerful females, and I’ve done it. I’m very proud of my Platirius series.
Chapter Chirp: What is your favorite part of this book (i.e: character(s), theme, title, cover art, etc.) and why?
D.L.: Platirius Book III releases tomorrow. My favorite part of it is the end. I’m all about unity among females. I can’t elaborate on it as I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I feel the ending was the perfect close for one that began with two opposing sides. In all, the females in the worlds I created have one goal in common—to fight for the advancement of the female race. Of course, I love the title, the characters, and art—I love it all because all the ideas in my series are mine. To see tangible proof of ideas and concepts you pull out of your head is a high for any author.
Chapter Chirp: What was the most surprising thing that you learned while writing your most recent book and did you face any challenges while writing this title?
D.L.: Initially, I struggled with closing Platirius III. Instead of six chapters, it ended up as ten. I felt I needed to answer every riddle that was left wide open in the previous books. It was also difficult for me to say goodbye to the characters I developed and have grown to love. I was astonished by how attached I’d become to them. That wasn’t something I was expecting. However, when you look at your creations as your “babies,” that’s when you know you’re a genuine author. You’re not putting something down on paper to follow a trend or earn a lot of money at once. Writing for the next viral trend doesn’t appeal to me. Trends are illusions. Here today, gone the next. When you genuinely care about what you write, it’s art, not a tool to gain fleeting, temporary perks. I plan for my art to be around for generations.
Chapter Chirp: What in your opinion do you believe makes a story truly great and why?
D.L.: Over the years, I’ve read a lot of great books. However, I’ve only read a few that made me feel as if I were actually inside the books, living with the characters. I believe if you can visualize the characters off the pages and on a “screen” inside your head, then it’s not just a book anymore. I get that feeling with all of my stories. In addition, if your words connect with the readers, eliciting deep emotion, then that’s what makes a story truly great.
Chapter Chirp: What's next for you, can you share a sneak peek or drop some teasers about your next work?
D.L.: I’ve just completed Book I of my new series, JanIus. It’s a spin-off for a character I’m not able to reveal at this time due to keeping the identity hidden until the end of Platirius, Book II. Also, JanIus was mentioned in Book III. I never expected to give this character a spotlight, but when something sprouted between the character and another main
character in Book III, I was intrigued. Having a dream about the two of them playing “hide the cannoli” set it in stone. I’m not a romance writer, and I never will be. However, I’m very interested in exploring what could happen between them. I took the dream as a sign to continue their storyline.
