The Interview
Chapter Chirp: Tell me a little bit about yourself and what drew you to become an author?
Marc Avery: I’m an introverted avid reader who loves tacos and Robocop. One day, I decided I had stories to tell and opened up a word document. I’ve been getting into mischief ever since.
Chapter Chirp: How long did it take you to write your upcoming release and what was your inspiration for this book?
Marc Avery: I’ve been writing this book off and on since 2011. So many rounds of editing. So many title changes. Lol. Not to mention one of the early drafts was stolen from me. Fun times. The inspiration came from a song called, “Keystone State of Mind.” I wanted the story set in Philadelphia. More importantly, I wanted my own Jack Reacher, Alex Cross, or Harry Bosch. Who knew it would take me 14 years to bring the story to fruition.
Chapter Chirp: What was the most surprising thing that you learned while writing your upcoming book?
Marc Avery: Great things come in the editing phase. The prologue is one of the most powerful passages in Discipline. It wouldn’t exist had it not been for a mistake I made during the editing phase.
Chapter Chirp: What is your favorite thing about this book (i.e: character(s), theme, title, cover art, etc.) and why?
Marc Avery: I’m probably most excited for readers to meet Discipline. I had a lot of fun creating him. Crime fiction is nothing without a formidable antagonist and he checks every box. Handsome, charming, intelligent, dangerous, resourceful, and vindictive.
Chapter Chirp: What draws you to writing crime fiction and what's your favorite aspect of this genre?
Marc Avery: Cool movie detectives have always fascinated me. Movies like Beverly Hills Cop, Bad Boys, and Lethal Weapon had me hooked. Don’t get me started on the car chases, fist fights, gun battles, and love interests!
Chapter Chirp: Are you currently working on a new title, if so, can you share some teaser information about it?
Marc Avery: Yes. I’m working on another book in the same universe as Discipline as well as a top-secret novella.
