Tablet on a table showing "DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE" cover with a woman's face. Nearby are headphones and a vase with dry branches.

I discovered this treasure on Netgalley while embarking on a quest for a new book to devour, a task that often leads me down a rabbit hole of literary exploration. As I scrolled through the myriad of titles available, I stumbled upon a captivating description that immediately seized my attention. The way the narrative was presented was so compelling that it felt as though the story was calling out to me, urging me to dive headfirst into its pages. The promise of intricate characters and a rich tapestry of interwoven lives sparked my curiosity and left me eager to uncover the layers of the plot.

If my memory serves me well, it took only a day or two for the publisher, Unbound, to graciously grant my request on Netgalley, a moment that filled me with a sense of anticipation and joy. The excitement of receiving that approval was palpable; it felt like unearthing a hidden gem that had been waiting for me to discover it. This marked my initial experience with a multi-generational read, a genre that I had yet to explore deeply until this point. The narrative unfolded across various time periods, showcasing the lives and experiences of different family members, each contributing their unique perspective to the overarching story. This experience set a high standard for any such stories I encounter in the future, as the depth and complexity of the characters and their relationships left a lasting impression on me. The way the author skillfully navigated through different eras and the impact of history on each generation was nothing short of remarkable. It made me reflect on the interconnectedness of our lives and how the choices of one generation can ripple through time, affecting those who come after.

What are your thoughts on multi-generational stories? Do you find them as enriching and profound as I do? I believe they offer a unique lens through which we can examine themes of legacy, identity, and the passage of time. Each character's journey is not only a personal one but also a collective experience that resonates with the reader on multiple levels. The exploration of familial bonds, the weight of tradition, and the inevitable change that each new generation brings can create a powerful narrative that lingers long after the last page is turned.

The Review

I was so excited to read this novel by Zahra Barri, and I feel like it did not disappoint! "Daughters of the Nile" follows three generations of women from the Bin-Khalid family, Fatiha, Yasminah, and Nadia. The stories of these women span through the years of 1940-2013 and take place in the areas of Paris, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and England. The novel goes back and forth through time and places weaving the stories of these women intricately, while sharing their stories of love, loss, struggles, and empowerment. Though each story is different, somehow they are similar in that they all go through life, navigating hardships while exuding courage and determination on their paths to figure out who they are and what they truly want in life. I loved the fact that this novel was inspired by the life of Doria Shafik, a feminist who was a key figure in the women's liberation in Egypt whose actions helped grant Egyptian women the right to vote under the Egyptian constitution. I also really appreciated the glossary at the end of the book that helped a non-Arabic speaking person such as myself to learn and understand some of the terms used in the book that I might not otherwise be familiar with. I highly recommend this book!
