This story marked my very first tentative foray into the vast and enticing world of novellas available through Kindle Unlimited, a subscription service that promises an extensive library of literary works at the fingertips of avid readers. It was an exciting moment when I received some free credits as part of a promotional campaign associated with my membership, allowing me to explore the offerings without any initial financial commitment. As I began to delve into the narrative, I found myself irresistibly drawn into the plot and characters that the author had crafted with such skill. The moment I started reading, I was captivated by the intricate details and the emotional depth woven throughout the story. Each chapter unfolded with a rhythm that kept me eagerly turning the virtual pages, and before I knew it, I was thoroughly ensnared by the unfolding drama and the complexities of the characters' lives. The author’s ability to create tension and evoke empathy was nothing short of remarkable, and I quickly realized that this novella was not merely a fleeting distraction, but rather a rich and immersive experience.
As the narrative progressed, my initial free credits were quickly depleted, and I found myself faced with a dilemma: should I stop reading and leave the story unfinished, or should I invest in additional credits to see the tale through to its conclusion? The answer was clear. I had no qualms whatsoever about purchasing more credits. The story had captured my emotions so completely that the thought of not knowing how it would end was simply unbearable. I was more than willing to spend a little extra to ensure that I could experience the resolution of the plot and the fates of the characters I had come to care for deeply. In retrospect, this experience was not just about reading a novella; it was about discovering the power of storytelling in literature that can transport us to different places and times. I found myself contemplating what other hidden gems might await me, each with the potential to draw me in just as this one had done. The initial toe dip into novellas had turned into a full plunge into a sea of narratives, characters, and worlds waiting to be discovered, and I look forward to exploring more novellas in the future.
The Review
What a gut-wrenching story! This was a short read from the perspective of Doris, a young girl who witnesses and endured abuse from her father and Elizabeth “Liz” (Doris’s mother) who endures not only abuse from her husband but also from her employer. This story was at times hard to read due to the harsh realities of the story being told. Overall, this was a good read. I think some bits needed another once over with proofreading and I wish the story had been a bit longer so we readers could’ve gotten to know the characters more.
