Book "Five-Star Stranger" by Kat Tang on a marble surface with newspapers and glasses. Bright cover features colorful figures.

The colorful and brightly designed cover art of "Five Star Stranger" is what initially captured my attention as I was leisurely scrolling through the various Goodreads giveaways. It presented an inviting and cheerful aesthetic, suggesting a light, fluffy, and cozy read that one might enjoy on a lazy afternoon with a cup of tea in hand. However, as I dove into the pages of the book, it quickly became evident that this was far from the case. The narrative unfolded in a manner that was much deeper and more profound than I had anticipated, revealing layers of complexity that challenged my initial assumptions. This experience serves as a perfect illustration of the age-old adage, "never judge a book by its cover," reminding us that appearances can be deceiving.

As I immersed myself in the story, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the richness of both the plot and the characters. The author skillfully crafted a narrative that resonated with contemporary themes, particularly the ways in which modern technology has altered our modes of communication. In a world where so much interaction occurs through screens—be it via text messages, social media, or video calls—the book poignantly explores the often superficial connections that can arise, leaving individuals feeling isolated despite being constantly "connected." This exploration of human relationships in the digital age struck a chord with me, as it reflects the realities many of us face today. The characters within "Five Star Stranger" were not merely archetypes; they were imbued with real depth and complexity, each grappling with their own challenges and desires. As I turned the pages, I found myself emotionally invested in their lives, rooting for their triumphs and empathizing with their struggles.

When it came time to rate the book, I found myself in a bit of a dilemma. I was torn between giving it a 4-star or a perfect 5-star rating because it truly was an exceptional read that left a lasting impression on me. Ultimately, I settled on a 4-star rating, and my decision was rooted in a personal desire for more. Specifically, I felt a strong yearning to learn more about the enigmatic unnamed stranger who played a pivotal role in the story. His character intrigued me, and I found myself craving additional insights into his story. It was as though I had only scratched the surface of his narrative, and I wished for just a little bit more to fully understand his significance in the overarching theme of the book.

The Review

"Five-Star Stranger" by Kat Tang was a knockout debut which was entertaining but also heartbreaking. It was like a gut punch right in the feels but in the best way possible. The main character (unnamed stranger) was charming but also raw and flawed. While working under the guise of helping others toward happiness he was able to begin sorting out his own demons. What a great short read!
