Ok, so technically I think this would fall under more of a bigger kid read, say from around 9 to 12 years old who are more readily able to engage with stories that not only entertain but also provoke thought and imagination. We have many fantasy elements such as witches, wizards, and a magical kingdom that have the makings for a really great story. These elements can serve as a captivating backdrop that allows young readers to explore their creativity while also identifying with the characters’ struggles and triumphs. The presence of witches and wizards opens up a plethora of possibilities for magical adventures and moral lessons. For instance, the characters can grapple with the responsibilities that come with great power, illustrating important themes of ethics and choices. Furthermore, the magical kingdom itself can be richly developed, featuring diverse landscapes, unique creatures, and intricate lore that can immerse readers in a fantastical world. This setting not only enhances the story’s appeal but also encourages readers to think critically about the world they inhabit and the values they hold.
Additionally, the narrative could incorporate elements of friendship, bravery, and self-discovery, which are crucial themes for the pre-teen audience. As the characters embark on their quests, they can encounter challenges that test their loyalty, courage, and wisdom. These experiences can resonate with young readers, who are often navigating their own social dynamics and personal growth during this pivotal stage of life. I think this could be a win for the younger fantasy audience, as it combines the allure of magical escapism with relatable life lessons, ultimately crafting a rich and engaging reading experience that could inspire a lifelong love for literature.
The Review
"Lilah and the Purple Pumpkin Thief" by J.D. Broyhill is a story following two young wizards Lilah Snipperdoom and her best friend Callderon on an adventure to solve the mystery of the missing purple pumpkins and to save their treasured Halloween celebration. The storyline was cute for a kids book, however the story felt rushed and slightly disorganized to me. I also felt that there was a lot of information that was unnecessary to the story that was added, kind of like fluff information. Overall, this was an ok read to me.
