Initially, what drew me to this book on Netgalley was the vibrant and eye-catching cover art that immediately caught my attention. The colors were bold and the design was both modern and artistic, creating an allure that was hard to resist. I have to confess that I have a weakness for attractive covers; they often serve as the first line of engagement for me, despite the common adage that one should not judge a book by its cover. However, I firmly believe that a good cover can certainly pique my interest and entice me to delve deeper into the content within. After being captivated by the cover, I moved on to read the book description, which provided a glimpse into the story's premise and themes. Although the subject matter wasn't something I would typically choose to read in my usual literary explorations, I found that it contained several intriguing elements that sparked my curiosity. The description hinted at complex characters and a plot that promised to explore profound themes, which made me consider stepping outside my comfort zone.

One significant concern I did have, however, was the realization that I hadn't read a book that was originally written in another language and then translated into English before this experience. This raised questions in my mind about the fidelity of the translation. I wondered how much of the original author's voice and intent would survive the transition from one language to another. Would the nuances, cultural references, and emotional depth of the original text be lost in translation? Such concerns often accompany works that traverse linguistic boundaries, and I was particularly interested in how this book would handle those challenges.

So, here's the conclusion I came to after reading this book. The narrative proved to be a rich tapestry of ideas and emotions, successfully maintaining the essence of the original story despite the translation process. The translator's skillful work allowed the characters to resonate deeply with me, their struggles and triumphs unfolding in a way that felt authentic and engaging. The themes explored in the book, which touched on universal human experiences, were conveyed with clarity and depth, making me appreciate the story even more. Ultimately, my initial attraction to the cover art led me to an unexpected literary journey that expanded my horizons and encouraged me to embrace works from diverse linguistic backgrounds in the future.

The Review

"No Place to Bury the Dead" started off as a bit of a slow read for myself, however, the story picked up and I was finally drawn in. Throughout the entire novel, author Karina Sainz Borgo, paints a vivid and often tragic scene. Main character Angustias Romero shows from beginning to end how resilient women are even in the face of tragedy, loss, and grief. She continually perseveres with the hand that life has dealt her and evolves into a stronger woman in the end. Besides being a bit slow in the beginning, I believe the only other downfall of this story was how abruptly it ends. It almost felt like there was something missing.
