I haven't been reading western books for long, but when I have, it has been strictly books by the talented duo of William W. Johnstone and his equally skilled nephew, J. A. Johnstone. Their works have captivated me, and I find myself eagerly anticipating each turn of the page. So far, I have read 2 of the 3 books by them that I currently own, and I can confidently say that I have not been disappointed in the slightest. Each story is a testament to their ability to weave intricate narratives that transport readers to the rugged landscapes of the American frontier. What truly stands out in their writing is their remarkable talent for creating vivid settings that feel alive and immersive. The dusty trails, sprawling ranches, and lawless towns are brought to life with such detail that you can almost smell the leather of the saddles and hear the distant echoes of gunfire. The authors have an uncanny ability to evoke a sense of place that makes you feel as though you are right there alongside the characters, experiencing their trials and triumphs firsthand.
Furthermore, the characters they craft are anything but one-dimensional. The rough-and-tumble protagonists are often layered with complexity, embodying the struggles and moral dilemmas faced by those living in a time when survival was a daily battle. From seasoned gunslingers to resilient pioneers, each character is meticulously developed, with backstories that add depth to their motivations and actions. Their flaws and strengths make them relatable, allowing readers to form a connection that transcends the pages of the book. In addition to their engaging storytelling, the Johnstones have a knack for dialogue that feels authentic and true to the era. The exchanges between characters are often laced with wit and grit, reflecting the harsh realities of life in the West while also providing moments of levity that balance the tension. This combination of compelling narrative, rich settings, and well-crafted characters makes their books not just enjoyable reads but also memorable experiences that linger in your mind long after you’ve turned the last page. As I continue my journey into the world of western literature, I look forward to exploring more of their works and discovering the stories that await me. Each book promises to be an adventure filled with excitement, danger, and the indomitable spirit of the American West, and I am eager to see where their storytelling will take me next.
The Review
“On the Royle Range (Forever Texas #3)” was the second Western novel that I’ve read by authors, William W. Johnstone & J.A. Johnstone. This story had a slew of characters, “good guys” and villains that were intriguing and interesting. The book doesn’t center around one story but three stories rather with the common denominator being that all the characters are connected by the Royle Ranch. I enjoyed each story as they were actioned pack the way you would expect a great Western novel to be however, they felt a bit rushed/ incomplete, and could possibly have been told better as individual books. The book was still really enjoyable and I’ll continue seeking out books by these authors as I have become a fan.
