This story had so many points of interest, intertwining historical fiction, fantasy, crime, and the paranormal in a captivating and intricate manner. Each genre brought its own unique flavor to the narrative, allowing readers to experience a rich tapestry of themes and emotions. The historical elements grounded the story in 1800's New England, immersing readers in the cultural and societal nuances of that era. Meanwhile, the fantasy aspects opened the door to devious vampires and extraordinary events, inviting readers to suspend their disbelief and explore the limitless possibilities of the human imagination. The crime elements added a layer of suspense and intrigue, drawing readers into a web of mystery that kept them guessing about the motivations and actions of the characters. This interplay between the mundane and the extraordinary heightened the stakes, creating a narrative that was both thrilling and mysterious. Additionally, the paranormal aspects introduced an eerie atmosphere, blurring the lines between reality and the supernatural, which further enriched the plot and character development.

As some of you may have realized, I appreciate reading not only books from big publishers but I also like to give independently published books a chance as well. This preference stems from a desire to discover hidden gems that may not receive the same level of marketing or attention as those from larger publishing houses. Independently published authors often bring fresh perspectives and innovative storytelling techniques that can be both refreshing and enlightening. Their works can offer unique insights and diverse voices that are sometimes overlooked in mainstream literature. There are so many people with a story to share, and by exploring independently published books, readers can connect with these voices. By choosing to read these works, we not only support emerging talent but also broaden our understanding of different experiences and viewpoints. This exploration can lead to a deeper appreciation for the art of storytelling and the myriad ways in which it can be expressed. Each book, whether from a well-known publisher or an independent one, has the potential to transport us to new worlds and challenge our perceptions.

The Review

“Reaper II: The Knights of Darkness” revolves around the New England region in the late 1800’s following Deputy Marshals Sean Callahan and Thomas Christian as they embark on solving sinister crimes in the area which are connected to vampires. This was a pretty decent supernatural horror fiction read. I was really torn between 3 & 4 stars so I would say it’s a solid 3.5 stars for me personally. I will probably read the first book of the series at some point and if anymore come after this second installment I would probably read those too.
