The Review
“The French Winemaker’s Daughter” shares two stories, one a young brave Jewish girl, Martine, at the beginning of WWII who needs to escape from her home, a Nazi-occupied section of France and the second story of a strong female pilot captain, Charlotte, feeling the societal pressures of life as a woman. The two female’s stories are intertwined by a vintage bottle of wine, to one, left as an inheritance and insurance for her future, and the other, given as a mostly thoughtless gift following a romantic encounter with her then boyfriend. I love that author Loretta Ellsworth made the two female lead characters as fierce women and didn’t make them appear smaller than they were like society would have them. While I found the story to be predictable it didn’t even matter because it was powerful, heartfelt, and soul-touching. I highly recommend this historical fiction as I think it’s a must read!
