If you haven't figured it out yet, I love historical fiction books, I mean I REALLY love historical fiction books. There’s something uniquely captivating about immersing oneself in the past through the lens of well-crafted narratives, rich characters, and meticulously researched settings. So, when the opportunity arose to request "Jewel of the Blues" from Netgalley, it was a no-brainer for me. Not only was the cover art of "Jewel of the Blues" vibrant and eye-catching, drawing me in with its stunning visuals, but the description of the book also transported me to a time long before I was alive. It painted a vivid picture of the 1920s, a decade marked by significant social change, cultural upheaval, and artistic flourishing. The allure of the Roaring Twenties, with its jazz music, flapper fashion, and the burgeoning Harlem Renaissance, beckoned to me, promising an adventure that would not only entertain but also educate.
Upon diving into the pages of the book, I was genuinely pleased with the portrayal of the strong female main character, whose resilience and determination shone through every chapter. She is not merely a passive figure; instead, she embodies the spirit of a woman striving to carve out her own identity and place in a world that often seeks to confine and define her. The supporting characters that surround her are equally compelling, each adding depth and richness to the narrative. They provide a tapestry of experiences that enhance the story, showcasing the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and the struggle against societal constraints. This story will fully immerse you into the vibrant atmosphere of the 1920s, allowing you to feel the pulse of the era as you navigate through the protagonist's journey. You will gain a glimpse into the life of a Black woman trying to make her way to the top, facing obstacles that are both personal and systemic. The narrative does not shy away from addressing the harsh realities of race and gender during this tumultuous period, yet it also celebrates the triumphs and joys of the human spirit. As you turn each page, you will find yourself swept away by the rich historical context and the emotional depth of the characters, making "Jewel of the Blues" a truly unforgettable reading experience.
The Review
"The Jewel of the Blues" shares the story of Lucille Love, a young girl who goes from traveling family gospel singer to sultry blues queen. Through the years, she endures many trials and tribulations as a woman of color trying to sing her way to the top during the vaudeville era. This never deters her from trying to achieve her hopes and dreams, until a secret from the past begins to catch up with her. I think author, Monica Chenault-Kilgore, is a talented writer who was able to truly capture what life would have been like for a woman, especially a POC who was trying to make her way up the entertainment ladder during this era in America. I found Lucille Love to be a strong main character with a wonderful array of supporting characters found in her manager (Marcus), troubadours (Bobby, Lincoln, & Mitchell), and “sister” Del. This story had grit, determination, and strength! Would recommend to anyone who enjoys the jazz age, historical fiction, or a novel with a strong female POC main character.
