This was a Goodreads giveaway book that piqued my curiosity and prompted me to delve into its pages. The description paints a picture of a rural, small-town setting, where the charm of close-knit community life permeates every interaction. In such towns, it’s not uncommon for residents to be familiar with each other’s lives, creating an atmosphere rich with shared histories and intertwined relationships. The narrative hints at a tapestry of unusual characters, each bringing their own quirks and idiosyncrasies to the story, which adds an intriguing layer to the plot. The presence of mystery woven throughout the narrative only heightened my interest, making me eager to uncover the secrets that lay hidden within this quaint Iowa county.
Furthermore, I like to explore independently published books, as they often provide a refreshing alternative to mainstream literature. These works can sometimes be overlooked by a broader audience, yet they frequently offer unique perspectives and innovative storytelling that traditional publishing might not embrace. By seeking out these stories, I not only support emerging authors but also expose myself to diverse voices and narratives that challenge conventional norms. This particular book was no exception; it was a testament to the creativity and originality that can flourish outside the bounds of mainstream publishing. I'm glad that I took a chance on this giveaway, as it opened up a world of storytelling that I might have otherwise missed.
The Review
"The Last Wren Song" by Jerry Zak follows farmer Stanton Burros and a rag-tag group of companions who uncover mysterious happenings in their small town of Trevor County, Iowa. The story begins with a torrential storm that brings this band of misfits together. Together, they piece together clues to uncover a truly devious plot that could change the future of the world as they know it. I found this book to have the makings of a truly great read, however, I found the storyline and characters to be a little underdeveloped. I found myself wanting to know more about out the characters and their individual stories. Finally, I found there were many issues surrounding the proofreading/editing of the book that need adjusting.
