This was a delightful and engaging historical fiction novel that I had the opportunity to acquire at no cost from Simon and Schuster simply by joining their mailing list. The process was quite straightforward and rewarding; once I signed up, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I was offered a selection of several free books to choose from. Naturally, my attention was immediately captured by the title in the historical fiction category. There’s something about the narrative style and the rich tapestry of life depicted in books set during the 1800s to early 1900s that captivates me. The intricate details of the social norms, the fashion of the time, and the historical events that shape the characters' lives create a vivid backdrop for the stories. I find myself irresistibly drawn to this particular time period, as it offers a unique blend of romance, adventure, and the struggles of everyday life against the backdrop of significant historical changes.

The 19th and early 20th centuries were marked by profound transformation—industrialization, the suffragette movement, and the aftermath of wars, all of which provide fertile ground for compelling storytelling. Each novel I read from this era transports me to a different world, allowing me to experience the challenges and triumphs of characters who navigate the complexities of their time. The language, the cultural references, and the historical context enrich my reading experience, making it not just enjoyable but also educational. Thus, when I stumbled upon this particular book, I felt an immediate connection, knowing it would likely resonate with my interests and preferences. It’s a period that I deeply appreciate, and I often find myself seeking out more stories that explore the intricacies of human experience during those pivotal years. Reading historical fiction from this time frame has become one of my favorite pastimes, and I eagerly look forward to discovering more gems that will further immerse me in the lives and adventures of those who lived in such a fascinating era.

The Review

Violet Grey and James Audley’s love story begins with a “chance” meeting and whirlwind romance. However, one day everything changes in an instant and they find themselves in unknown territory where they no longer trust or feel like they know each other. What begins as a ruse quickly turns into them realizing their true feelings of still being in love. This was a pretty good story, however, sometimes it felt as though the storyline dragged on much longer than necessary. Overall a nice read with some fun bits, I enjoyed it.
