Personally, 2024 has proven to be an exceptionally interesting and transformative year in my life. Throughout the past months, I have experienced significant growth in various aspects of self-care, self-love, and a deeper understanding of my overall self. This journey of self-discovery and nurturing has been enlightening, and I find it essential to share my reflections. I often wonder how many people can truly relate to this sentiment, but I suspect that many individuals who juggle the responsibilities of being a spouse and a parent can empathize with the feelings of exhaustion that sometimes accompany these roles. The demands of family life can be overwhelming, and it is all too easy to lose sight of one’s own identity when so much focus is directed towards home and family obligations. If you've had the chance to read some of my earlier reviews, you might already be aware that 2024 marked a pivotal moment when I re-ignited my passion for reading. This rekindling was not just about picking up books; it was about rediscovering a piece of myself that had been buried beneath the weight of stress and the pressures that life has thrown my way in recent years. Reading has always been a sanctuary for me, a way to escape and explore new worlds, ideas, and perspectives. Don’t get me wrong; I wouldn’t trade my life as a spouse and parent for anything in the world. The love and joy that come from my family are irreplaceable. However, it is crucial to remember the importance of self-care and to ensure that we do not neglect our own needs and passions in the process.

With this realization in mind, I set a personal goal to read more this year. The commitment to immerse myself in literature became a source of relaxation and rejuvenation, and boy, did I ever dive into it! I embarked on a reading journey that led me to explore a diverse array of genres, authors, and stories. In fact, I found myself reading over a hundred books throughout the year, which was both exhilarating and enriching. It was a delightful challenge to narrow down my favorites to just ten, as each book I encountered brought something unique and valuable to my understanding of life and myself. So, without further ado, I am excited to share with you my top 10 favorite books that I personally read this year. Each of these selections holds a special place in my heart and has contributed to my growth in different ways. The process of choosing just ten titles was no easy feat, given the vast number of incredible stories I encountered. But I invite you to continue reading as I dive into the descriptions of each book, share my insights and reflections that highlight why they resonated with me. In no particular order, here we go!

-LGBTQ+ Historical Fiction-

The Very Long, Very Strange Life of Isaac Dahl by Bart Yates

Description

Both sweeping and exquisitely intimate, award-winning author Bart Yates blends historical fact and fiction in a surprising, thought-provoking saga spanning 12 significant days across nearly 100 years in the life of a single man, beginning in 1920s Utah.

“Each day is a story, whether or not that story makes any damn sense or is worth telling to anyone else.”

At the age of ninety-six, Isaac Dahl sits down to write his memoir. For Isaac, an accomplished journalist and historian, finding the right words to convey events is never a problem. But this book will be different from anything he has written before. Focusing on twelve different days, each encapsulated in a chapter, Isaac hopes to distill the very essence of his life.

There are days that begin like any other, only to morph through twists of fate. An avalanche strikes Bingham, Utah, and eight-year-old Isaac and his twin sister, Agnes, survive when they are trapped in an upside-down bathtub. Other days stand apart in history—including a day in 1942, when Isaac, stationed on the USS Houston in the Java Sea as a rookie correspondent, confronts the full horror of war. And there are days spent simply, with his lifelong friend, Bo, or with Danny, the younger man whose love transforms Isaac’s later years—precious days with significance that grows clear only in hindsight.

From the Oklahoma Dust Bowl to a Mississippi school at the apex of the civil rights movement, Isaac tells his story with insight, wisdom, and emotional depth. The Very Long, Very Strange Life of Isaac Dahl is a wonderful, singular narrative that will spark conversation and reflection—a reminder that there is no such thing as an ordinary life, and the greatest accomplishment of all is to live and love fully.

My Take: The Very Long, Very Strange Life of Isaac Dahl by Bart Yates

This novel stands as a remarkable testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the remarkable strength that individuals can muster when faced with the challenges and adversities that life presents. This novel is not merely a story; it is a profound exploration of the complexities of human existence, encapsulated through the life of its main character, Isaac Dahl. The narrative is structured around twelve pivotal days that serve as cornerstones in Isaac's nearly century-long journey, each day representing a significant turning point that shapes his identity, beliefs, and relationships. Yates masterfully weaves together themes of family, friendship, love, loss, and humor, creating a rich tapestry that resonates deeply with readers. Each chapter is meticulously crafted, allowing readers to experience the full spectrum of human emotions alongside Isaac. The author’s ability to infuse humor into moments of sorrow and reflection adds a layer of depth to the narrative, making it not only poignant but also uplifting.

Moreover, while the story is fictional, it is imbued with references to various historical events, lending an air of realism and authenticity that enhances the reading experience. Yates navigates these historical touchstones with a delicate balance of tenderness and insight, allowing readers to connect the personal with the broader human experience. In my personal reading journey, I found this novel to be incredibly touching and transformative. The way Yates captures the essence of life's fleeting moments and the importance of cherishing relationships is something that resonates long after the final page is turned. I cannot emphasize enough the impact this book has had on me; it is a narrative that invites reflection and introspection, prompting readers to consider their own lives and the moments that have shaped them. This is a book that I wholeheartedly believe deserves to be shared and discussed, as it encapsulates the very essence of what it means to be human. I am certain that I will revisit this novel in the future, as its themes are timeless and its storytelling is simply enchanting. My Take: Rise, Tomorrow Girl by Cara Martin

This story is set in a not-so-distant future North America, a world that has been irrevocably altered by the ravages of past pandemics, including SARS and Covid-19. In this unsettling yet gripping narrative, society grapples with the emergence of a new and deadly illness known as the Century Virus, which poses a significant threat to the young population. The story centers around the main character, Leanne Khoury, a relatable and deeply developed protagonist who finds herself grappling with the harsh realities of this devastating virus. As Leanne becomes infected, the narrative delves into her personal struggles, her experiences with the healthcare system, and the emotional turmoil that accompanies her illness. The author, Cara Martin, masterfully crafts a tale that is both captivating and thought-provoking, making it one of those books that readers find nearly impossible to put down. From the very first pages, the story pulls you in with its vivid imagery and compelling character development, flowing effortlessly through a series of events that are as engaging as they are poignant.

The plot is intricately woven, presenting a rich tapestry of challenges that Leanne faces, both internally and externally, as she navigates a world that is fraught with uncertainty and fear. What sets “Rise, Tomorrow Girl” apart is its ability to blend elements of dystopia with contemporary issues, creating a narrative that feels both timely and relevant. The book explores significant themes such as the political landscape surrounding public health, the ethical implications of scientific advancements, and the societal and cultural divides that have become increasingly pronounced in the United States. These themes will resonate deeply with readers, as they reflect the ongoing debates and discussions that are prevalent in our own society today. I find myself wishing that this compelling story could be adapted into a movie, as the vivid scenes and emotional depth would translate beautifully to the screen. The potential for visual storytelling could amplify the already rich narrative, bringing Leanne’s journey and the world around her to life in a new and exciting way.

As for the future of Leanne’s story, I am left with a sense of anticipation and hope that Cara Martin may choose to write a follow-up to this enthralling book. The world she has created is ripe for further exploration, and I would eagerly dive into any continuation of Leanne’s journey. I highly recommend this book, not only for its gripping storyline but also for its insightful commentary on the human condition in times of crisis. It is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a blend of suspense, character-driven narratives, and social commentary.

My Take: A Monsoon Risisng by Thea Guanzon

Talasyn & Alaric, enemies to newlyweds, Lightweaver and Shadowforged…ughh this couldn’t have been any better. The dynamic between these two characters is so richly developed, showcasing their contrasting natures and the complexities of their relationship. Talasyn, with her radiant powers as a Lightweaver, embodies hope and illumination, while Alaric, the enigmatic Shadowforged, represents the depths of darkness and mystery. Their initial animosity sets the stage for a tumultuous yet captivating love story that unfolds throughout the narrative. I had not read the first book in this series, so I was playing catch up in the beginning, but it didn’t take long to sort out who was who and what was what. The author skillfully weaves in backstory and character motivations, making it accessible for new readers while still rewarding for those who have followed the series from the start.

The intricate world-building is impressive, filled with lore that enriches the plot and immerses the reader in a fantastical realm where magic is both a gift and a curse. This was absolutely a killer read and I enjoyed every minute of it. The pacing of the story is expertly handled, with moments of high tension interspersed with tender scenes that allow the characters to grow and evolve. The chemistry between Talasyn and Alaric is palpable, and their journey from adversaries to partners is filled with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. There was magic, romance, and drama, all of which were expertly balanced to create a narrative that is both engaging and interesting.

I hope there will be another book! The ending left me craving more, with unanswered questions and potential plotlines that could be explored in future installments. The author has created a world that is rich with possibilities, and I can only imagine the adventures that await Talasyn and Alaric as they navigate their new life together, facing external threats and internal struggles alike. Absolutely recommend to all romantasy aficionados and fantasy fans alike. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a blend of romance and fantasy, with well-drawn characters and a plot that keeps you guessing. Whether you are a seasoned reader of the genre or just dipping your toes into the world of romantasy, this story promises to deliver an unforgettable experience that will linger long after the final page is turned.

-Biography Autobiography-

Under the Naga Tail by Mae Bunseng Taing with James Taing

Description

The courageous true story of one man’s daring escape from Cambodia’s genocidal regime and survival of the secret second killing fields at Preah Vihear.

Mae Taing is a teenager living in modern Phnom Penh when the Khmer Rouge rises to power and forever alters the lives of millions. Wrenched from life as he knows it and forced from his home, Mae endures years of backbreaking work, constant starvation, and cruel torture from his captors—the supposed “freedom fighters” who turned against their own people.

Ultimately faced with a slow death in the camps or a quick death in the wilderness crawling with soldiers, Mae makes the heart-breaking choice to escape into the dark tropical jungles. But just when he’s able to overcome unthinkable odds in the hopes of reuniting with his family, fate takes a cruel turn as Thailand’s views towards refugees change and Mae is sent with thousands of others to the ancient temple mountain, Preah Vihear. Thrown from its heights, surrounded by landmines, and plunged into unspeakable terror once more, Mae must hold firm to his determination to survive as he musters the strength to face the dangers ahead.

Written by Mae himself with his son James, this gripping and inspiring memoir is not merely an incredible story of survival, but a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to endure and prevail in spite of tremendous adversity. Under the Naga Tail will find its place among the most epic true stories of personal triumph.

My Take: Under the Naga Tail by Mae Bunseng Taing with James Taing

This is an extraordinarily poignant memoir that delves deeply into the harrowing experiences of young Mae as he navigates the horrific landscape of the Cambodian genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge during the 1970s. This powerful narrative serves not only as a personal account of survival but also as a broader commentary on the immense suffering, profound cruelty, and remarkable courage that characterized this dark chapter in history. It is a story that resonates far beyond the individual, impacting the lives of countless families and, indeed, an entire nation. The memoir captures the visceral realities of life under a regime that sought to annihilate its own people, detailing the psychological and physical torment that Mae and his fellow Cambodians endured. It paints an evocative picture of the fear that gripped the population, the loss of loved ones, and the struggle to maintain hope in the face of overwhelming despair. Mae’s journey is not just one of survival; it embodies the resilience of the human spirit, illustrating how individuals can find strength even in the most dire circumstances.

As I reflect on the narrative, I find myself grappling with the profound sense of loss and trauma experienced by the Cambodian people. It is almost incomprehensible to imagine the depths of suffering they faced, yet Mae’s story is a testament to their unyielding will to persevere and seek freedom against all odds. The memoir serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities that can occur when hatred and tyranny prevail, and it compels readers to confront the uncomfortable truths of history. I am left with a deep sense of gratitude for Mae Bunseng Taing and James Taing for their courage in sharing Mae’s story with the world. Their work not only honors the memories of those who suffered but also provides an essential lesson for future generations. While we may not possess the power to alter the past, we certainly have the ability to learn from it, ensuring that such horrors are never repeated. This memoir is not merely a book; it is a crucial piece of history that demands to be read, understood, and remembered. It is a must-read for anyone seeking to comprehend the complexities of human resilience and the enduring quest for justice and peace in the aftermath of unimaginable suffering.

-Memoir/History-

Written in the Stars by Tara Roberts

Description

For fans of Cheryl Strayed’s Wild and Jesmyn Ward’s Men We Reaped, this searing memoir by a National Geographic explorer recounts one woman’s epic journey to trace the global slave trade across the Atlantic Ocean—and find her place in the world.

“Tara Roberts is a pioneer and an inspiration. Her work does not so much ‘unearth’ the past as pull it respectfully out of the depths of the sea. I am deeply moved by this book, and by her journey.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love

When Tara Roberts first caught sight of a photograph at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History depicting the underwater archaeology group Diving With a Purpose, it called out to her. Here were Black women and men strapping on masks, fins, and tanks to explore Atlantic Ocean waters along the coastlines of Africa, North America, and Central America, seeking the wrecks of slave ships long lost in time. Inspired, Roberts joined them—and started on a path of discovery more challenging and personal than she could ever have imagined.

In this lush and lyrical memoir, she tells a story of exploration and reckoning that takes her from her home in Washington, D.C., to an exotic array of locales: Thailand and Sri Lanka, Mozambique, South Africa, Senegal, Benin, Costa Rica, and St. Croix.  The journey connects her with other divers, scholars, and archaeologists, offering a unique way of understanding the 12.5 million souls carried away from their African homeland to enslavement on other continents. But for Roberts, the journey is also intensely personal. Inspired by the descendants of those who lost their lives during the Middle Passage, she decides to plumb her own family history and life as a Black woman to help make sense of her own identity.

Complex and unflinchingly authentic, this deeply moving narrative heralds an important new voice in literature that will open minds and hearts everywhere.

My Take: Written in the Waters by Tara Roberts

Written in the Waters is an exceptionally thought-provoking and moving memoir that intricately chronicles a significant period in the life of author Tara Roberts, spanning from 2017 through 2022. Throughout this compelling narrative, Roberts skillfully takes the reader on a multitude of adventures across several countries, immersing herself in diverse cultures and engaging with a wide array of individuals from all walks of life. Each interaction is not merely a chance encounter; rather, it serves as a stepping stone in her journey of self-discovery and understanding, as she meticulously sifts through the complex layers of history, all while grappling with the profound implications of the African diaspora. The memoir is catalyzed by a powerful moment when a photograph in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) ignites a deep and urgent call within her. This moment compels her to embark on a quest to unravel the threads of her identity—exploring who she is, tracing her ancestral roots, and contemplating her place within the broader tapestry of the world. Roberts’ narrative is not just a personal journey; it resonates with universal themes of identity, belonging, and the quest for understanding one's heritage.

This book stands out not only for its emotional depth but also for its thorough research and informative content. Roberts shares uncommon knowledge about organizations such as DWP (Diving With Purpose), the Slave Wrecks Project, and the Centro Comunitário de Buceo Embajadores y Embajadores Del Mar. Each of these entities plays a crucial role in preserving and uncovering the submerged histories of the African diaspora, highlighting their specific missions to honor and remember those who have been lost to history. Through her exploration of these organizations, Roberts sheds light on the importance of marine archaeology and its connection to the narratives of enslaved peoples.

Moreover, the memoir delves into the harrowing realities of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, offering a myriad of information about the millions of Black individuals—both known and unknown—who endured unimaginable brutality during this dark chapter of history. Roberts poignantly illustrates how the legacy of this trauma continues to reverberate through generations, impacting the lives of descendants who carry the weight of their ancestors' experiences. The emotional resonance of these stories is profound, as it invites readers to reflect on the lasting effects of historical injustices and the resilience of those who came before us. I found myself moved in countless ways by this powerful narrative, which serves as an affecting reminder of the necessity for history to be told from diverse perspectives, including those of historically marginalized groups and peoples. Roberts’ eloquent storytelling not only honors the memories of those who suffered but also advocates for a more inclusive understanding of history that acknowledges all voices. This memoir is undoubtedly one of the best books I have read this year, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of identity, history, and the interconnectedness of the human experience.

We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza

Description

A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK

Named a Best Book Pick of 2021 by Harper’s Bazaar and Real Simple

Named a Most Anticipated Book of Fall by People, Essence, New York Post, PopSugar, New York Newsday, Entertainment Weekly, Town & Country, Bustle, Fortune, and Book Riot

Told from alternating perspectives, this “propulsive, deeply felt tale of race and friendship” (People) follows two women, one Black and one white, whose friendship is indelibly altered by a tragic event.

Jen and Riley have been best friends since kindergarten. As adults, they remain as close as sisters, though their lives have taken different directions. Jen married young, and after years of trying, is finally pregnant. Riley pursued her childhood dream of becoming a television journalist and is poised to become one of the first Black female anchors of the top news channel in their hometown of Philadelphia.

But the deep bond they share is severely tested when Jen’s husband, a city police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed Black teenager. Six months pregnant, Jen is in freefall as her future, her husband’s freedom, and her friendship with Riley are thrown into uncertainty. Covering this career-making story, Riley wrestles with the implications of this tragic incident for her Black community, her ambitions, and her relationship with her lifelong friend.

Like Tayari Jones’s An American Marriage and Jodi Picoult’s Small Great Things, We Are Not Like Them takes “us to uncomfortable places—in the best possible way—while capturing so much of what we are all thinking and feeling about race. A sharp, timely, and soul-satisfying novel” (Emily Giffin, New York Times bestselling author) that is both a powerful conversation starter and a celebration of the enduring power of friendship.

My Take: We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza

This novel is a brilliant narrative that delves deeply into the harrowing aftermath of the tragic shooting and killing of Justin Dwyer, a 14-year-old Black youth who was unarmed at the time of the incident. This heart-wrenching event serves as the catalyst for the unfolding story, which intricately weaves together the lives of two lifelong friends, Leroya “Riley” Wilson and Jenny “Jen” Murphy. Riley, a dedicated Black news reporter, finds herself grappling with the complexities of her profession while navigating her personal feelings about the racial dynamics at play. Meanwhile, Jen, who is the pregnant wife of one of the white police officers involved in the shooting, faces her own set of challenges as she confronts the implications of her husband’s actions and the societal perceptions surrounding them.

The novel is structured around alternating narratives, allowing readers to gain a multifaceted perspective on the events that transpire. This dual viewpoint not only enriches the storytelling but also highlights the stark contrasts in experiences and perceptions that exist between Riley and Jen, reflecting the broader societal issues of race, discrimination, and unconscious bias. Through their journeys, the authors skillfully illuminate the complexities of friendship strained by societal divides, the weight of personal and collective grief, and the urgent need for dialogue in the face of injustice. As I immersed myself in this standout novel, I found it to be an exceptional vehicle for sparking crucial discussions surrounding race relations, systemic discrimination, and the often-unrecognized biases that permeate our daily lives.

The authors, whose dynamic partnership has produced compelling narratives previously, once again deliver a powerful story that resonates deeply in our current climate. Having read this book, I am not only left with a sense of fulfillment but also a desire to seek out more works from these two talented women. Their messages are not only relevant but also vital for understanding and addressing the divides that strain our cultural atmosphere today. Their writing serves as a clarion call for awareness and empathy in a world that often feels divided along racial lines, making “We Are Not Like Them” an essential read for anyone looking to engage with these pressing issues in a meaningful way.

My Take: The Oregon Trail (Go West, Young Man #2) by William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone

This story stands out as one of the most captivating western novels I have ever had the pleasure of reading. This remarkable story provides a realistic portrayal of the arduous journey that countless pioneers undertook as they traveled in wagon trains to settle in the untamed expanse of the Wild West during the 1800s. The authors skillfully weave together elements of adventure, romance, tragedy, and even a hint of mystery, creating a rich tapestry that captures the essence of this perilous journey undertaken by families seeking new beginnings and a brighter future. The narrative is filled with action-packed sequences that keep readers on the edge of their seats, as characters face numerous challenges and dangers along the trail. From encounters with hostile forces to the everyday struggles of survival in the harsh environment, each moment is imbued with tension and excitement.

Additionally, the romantic subplots add depth to the characters' journeys, showcasing the complexities of love and relationships amidst the chaos of their travels. Tragedy also plays a significant role, reminding readers of the harsh realities faced by those who dared to dream of a new life in a land fraught with peril. -Historical Fiction-

Fleeing France by Alan Hlad

Description

Driving an ambulance in France after the fall of Dunkirk, an American nightclub singer races to evacuate a British pilot and a Jewish orphan across more than 4,000 miles towards a precarious freedom in this emotional, action-packed story of sacrifice, hope, and devotion inspired by real wartime events.

France, 1939: A talented singer, Ruth Lacroix has left Maine to live with her aunt and uncle, dreaming of performing at the Casino de Paris. But with the outbreak of war, and the heartbreaking news that her cousin has been killed by German forces, that goal is supplanted by another—to support France in any way she can.

Though Ruth has never driven a vehicle larger than the tractor on her parents’ farm, she joins a friend in enlisting as a driver for the French ambulance corps. On their way to transfer injured soldiers to Dunkirk for evacuation, they encounter Jimmie, a British Royal Air Force pilot with No. 73 Squadron RAF, who has bailed out of his burning plane. As Dunkirk falls, blocking off the route to the northern coast, word spreads of a daring Allied plan to rescue the remaining troops and civilians from ports in western France: code name Operation Aerial.

Over two hazardous weeks, Ruth and Jimmie will journey hundreds of miles together, helping other refugees as they rush to reach the sea before they are overtaken by the Germany army. But all their courage and resilience offer no certainty in wartime, when a single stroke of luck, or a split-second decision, can mean the difference between life and death . . .

My Take: Fleeing France by Alan Hlad

This novel takes us on an evocative journey through the tumultuous landscape of World War II, weaving together the intricate narratives of three distinct characters, each representing a unique perspective on the harrowing experiences of that era. The first character we meet is Ruth, an American-born singer who has made France her home in pursuit of her lifelong dream to grace the grand stages of Paris with her melodious voice. Her aspirations, however, are shattered by a sudden familial tragedy that compels her to re-evaluate her priorities and ultimately leads her to join the war effort as a volunteer. This transformation from a hopeful artist to a determined fighter showcases the profound impact of war on personal dreams and the sacrifices individuals make in the name of a greater cause. The second perspective is that of Jimmie, a British fighter pilot who finds himself soaring through the skies as a member of the Allied forces. Jimmie's thoughts frequently drift back to his family, particularly his younger sister Nora, who is courageously battling the challenges posed by polio. His reflections on family and home serve as a poignant reminder of what is at stake in the conflict, grounding his aerial exploits in the emotional weight of personal loss and longing. The duality of his existence as a soldier in combat and a brother and son worried for his family adds depth to his character, illustrating the human side of war that is often overshadowed by the heroics of battle. Finally, we are introduced to Winston Churchill, the newly appointed Prime Minister of Britain, who stands at the helm of a nation preparing to confront the encroaching darkness of tyranny. Churchill's resolve to lead his countrymen to victory is depicted with a sense of urgency and determination, capturing the essence of leadership during one of history's most challenging times. His strategic mindset and unwavering spirit serve as a beacon of hope for the British people, reflecting the monumental responsibility he bears as he navigates the complexities of wartime politics and the fight for freedom.

This novel adeptly captures not only the atrocities that France endured during the war but also highlights the extraordinary bravery and resilience exhibited by countless men, women, and children who faced unimaginable hardships. The author, Alan Hlad, has clearly invested significant effort into researching the historical context, infusing the narrative with factual details that enrich the storytelling and provide readers with insights into events they may not have been familiar with prior to engaging with this book. The emotional depth of the characters is remarkable; I found myself deeply connected to each of their individual journeys, experiencing their struggles and triumphs as if they were my own. The storytelling is both touching and heartbreaking, making it a compelling read that I would highly recommend to others who are interested in narratives that explore the human experience during times of conflict and adversity.

-LGBTQ+ Romantasy-

North is the Night by Emily Rath

Description

Two bold young women defy the gods and mortals, living and dead, in this darkly mythical, Finnish folklore-inspired romantasy duology for readers of T. Kingfisher's Nettle & Bone, Danielle L. Jensen, Thea Guanzon, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec.

In the Finnish wilderness, more than wolves roam the dark forests. For Siiri and Aina, summer's fading light is a harbinger of unwelcome change. Land-hungry Swedes venture north, threatening the peace; a zealous Christian priest denounces the old ways; and young women have begun to disappear.

Siiri vows to protect Aina from danger. But even Siiri cannot stop a death goddess from dragging her friend to Tuonela, the mythical underworld. Determined to save Aina, Siiri braves a dangerous journey north to seek the greatest shaman of legend, the only person to venture to the realm of death and return alive.

In Tuonela, the cruel Witch Queen turns Aina's every waking moment into a living nightmare. But armed with compassion and cleverness, Aina learns the truth of her capture: the king of the underworld himself has plans for her. To return home, Aina must bargain her heart—as Siiri plots a daring rescue of the woman she loves the most.

My Take: North is the Night by Emily Rath

North is the Night was initially an intimidating book from the outside because of its shear size. However, once I dove into the pages I was immediately hooked. The author initially sets the stage of the story by giving some background information on people and places in the book giving the reader some context before beginning the journey of the story. This book is inspired by Finnish mythology, infused with an extra touch of fantasy. The story is a captivating split narrative novel that intricately follows the lives and experiences of two lifelong friends hailing from a quaint and picturesque small town in Finland. The protagonists, Siiri Jarintyttär and Aina Taavintyttär, are not just ordinary friends; they share a bond that has been forged over years of companionship, laughter, and shared memories. However, as the story unfolds, their friendship faces significant challenges that put their deep-rooted connection to the test. Each woman grapples with her own set of beliefs about the world around them, which are shaped by their unique experiences and perspectives. The plot takes both women on individual journeys of self-discovery, as they navigate the complexities of their identities and are confronted with doubts and insecurities. The interplay between Siiri and Aina's contrasting personalities adds depth to the narrative, as they both seek to understand not only themselves but also the world that surrounds them.

Emily Rath, the talented author behind this enthralling tale, masterfully weaves a tantalizing and multifaceted story that captures the essence of friendship, love, and the struggles of personal growth. Her writing is powerful and expressive, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the emotional landscapes of the characters. The vivid descriptions and rich imagery evoke a sense of realism that makes Siiri and Aina's experiences resonate deeply with the audience. Rath's ability to create relatable and complex characters is one of the hallmarks of this novel, making it easy for readers to connect with their journeys.

North is the Night is not merely a tale of friendship; it is a beautifully crafted narrative that explores themes of love, heartbreak, fantasy, and magic that exists within the everyday lives of its characters. The novel is filled with poignant moments that tug at the heartstrings, as well as instances of enchantment that transport readers to a world where the extraordinary intertwines with the ordinary. The emotional depth of the story is enhanced by the rich cultural backdrop of Finland, which serves as both a setting and a character in its own right, influencing the events and the characters' choices.

As the story progresses, readers become increasingly invested in the fates of Siiri and Aina, eagerly turning the pages to discover how their friendship evolves and whether they can overcome the obstacles that threaten to drive them apart. The narrative is infused with a sense of urgency and anticipation, leaving readers longing for resolution while simultaneously appreciating the beauty of the journey itself. In conclusion, “North is the Night” is a stunning novel that leaves a lasting impression on its readers. It is a story that celebrates the complexities of friendship and the transformative power of love, while also delving into the intricacies of self-perception and belief systems. The anticipation for the next book in the series is palpable, as readers are left yearning to see where Siiri and Aina's paths will lead them next in their quest for understanding and connection in a world that is both magical and challenging.
