History is such an important component of learning and growing as humans. It serves as a vast repository of knowledge that informs our understanding of the world and our place within it. Without history, we lose a critical sense of identity regarding who we are, where we come from, and even how far we've come from past to present. Our individual and collective identities are deeply intertwined with the narratives of our ancestors, the events that shaped our societies, and the cultural legacies that have been passed down through generations. Understanding history enables us to appreciate the complexities of human experience, including the triumphs and tragedies that have defined various civilizations. It provides context for our current social, political, and economic structures, allowing us to recognize patterns and draw lessons from the past. For instance, by studying historical events such as wars, revolutions, and movements for civil rights, we can gain insights into the struggles and achievements that have paved the way for contemporary freedoms and rights.

Moreover, I believe that it is crucial for all history to be told, no matter how difficult it may be to discuss. This includes acknowledging uncomfortable truths, such as injustices, conflicts, and the darker aspects of human behavior. Engaging with these challenging narratives is essential for fostering a more nuanced understanding of our shared human experience. It encourages empathy and critical thinking, as we confront the consequences of actions taken in the past and their lasting impacts on present and future generations. In addition, an inclusive approach to history ensures that diverse voices and perspectives are represented, allowing for a richer and more comprehensive understanding of our world. This inclusivity not only honors the experiences of marginalized groups but also enriches the collective narrative, making it more relevant to all individuals. By embracing the full spectrum of historical experiences, we can cultivate a sense of connection and responsibility toward each other and the world we inhabit.

Ultimately, history is not just a collection of dates and events; it is a living, breathing entity that shapes our values, informs our decisions, and influences our aspirations. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, reflecting on the lessons of history becomes increasingly vital. It equips us with the knowledge to make informed choices, to challenge injustices, and to strive for a better future. In this way, history is not merely a subject to be studied; it is a foundational element of our humanity that guides us toward growth and understanding.

The Review

“Under the Naga Tail” by Mae Bunseng Taing with James Taing is a heart wrenching memoir that tells the story of how young Mae, survived the Cambodian genocide inflicted by the Khmer Rouge during the 1970’s. This was an eye-opening story of suffering, cruelty, and courage that changed not only one man’s life or one family’s lives but an entire population of people’s lives. I cannot begin to fathom enduring what the Cambodian people had to go through and still managing to keep pushing forward to freedom. I really feel at a loss for words other than this is a must read! Thank you to Mae Bunseng Taing and James Taing for sharing Mae’s story with the world. We may not be able to change history but we can learn from it and change the future.
